Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay Look Ahead: Day 33

INDIANAPOLIS (October 14, 2016) – The Torch Relay is the premier event of Indiana’s Bicentennial celebrations. A Visit Indiana Initiative, designed to inspire and unify Hoosiers by symbolically “passing the torch,” connecting generations to IGNITE our future.

The torch will make its way through the final county, Marion on Saturday, October 15, 2016:

Marion County: Stops along the relay route include the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), Marian University, Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA), Butler University, Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Governor’s residence, Propylaeum, Benjamin Harrison Home, Madame Walker Theater, Indianapolis Urban League, Indiana War Memorial, Monument Circle, Anthem, Eli Lilly, Mexican Consulate, Fletcher Place, Fountain Square, Lucas Oil Stadium, ending at the Indiana Statehouse for the Grand Finale and Hoosier Homecoming celebration.

“The relay is intended to be a unifying moment in our history, a rallying cry for Indiana pride,” said Mark Newman, executive director of the Indiana Office of Tourism Development (IOTD). “And there is no better way to accomplish that than by honoring our most precious resource, our people.”

The torch will be used to illuminate the everlasting light for Indiana in one of the two dedicated public art pieces, called Lux Aeterna (Eternal Light), by New York artist Osman Akan. The sculpture is part of the new Bicentennial Plaza located on the west side of the statehouse grounds. The everlasting light will serve as an homage to the state’s first 200 years and an inspiration for generations of Hoosiers to come.

Hoosier Homecoming is a free, family fun and learning day to be held in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday, October 15th, 2016 as a signature event of the Bicentennial celebration. “Hoosier Homecoming” will bring families together from all communities across Indiana, to learn more about our shared history, dedicate Bicentennial Plaza and the Statehouse Education Center in the State Library, and celebrate the culmination of the Bicentennial Torch Relay.
