Marion County to host “Celebrations” on final leg of Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay

Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay concludes 3,200 mile journey on Oct. 15

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay will complete its journey in Marion County on Saturday, October 15.  The relay, which began on September 9, in Corydon, will have completed over 3,200 miles visiting all 92 Indiana counties.  The Marion County portion of the relay will commence at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway and culminate at the Indiana Statehouse during the Hoosier Homecoming event.


On the Marion County leg, the Torch will be carried by 34 torchbearers, each chosen by the Marion County Torch Bearer Selection Committee.  The committee, led by Steve Campbell, selected these torch bearers to represent the history and diversity of Marion County.


The Relay will pass many historic and cultural sites as well as participating in community celebrations taking place along the 16 mile route.   The relay will employ modes of conveyance that are symbolic of the history and heritage of Indiana, specifically Marion County, including antique Indianapolis Fire Department firetrucks, Stutz Bearcat automobiles, BlueIndy Cars and others.


The Celebrations include:



  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway- Torch Lighting Ceremony


      • 8AM-9AM, Open to the public.  
      • Free donuts and milk to the first 500 guests.
      • Mayor Joe Hogsett to speak
      • Torch Lighting Ceremony, Indy Car doing laps with torch around track


  • Marian University- Medical School


      • 9AM-9:30AM
      • Celebration hosted by Down Syndrome Indiana
      • Torchbearer(s): Jen Buechler, Dr. Richard Schreiner, and Ariana Tejada (being honored posthumously by friend: Makinzee Thomas.)


  • Marian University, Main Entrance


      • 9AM-10AM
      • Coffee and donuts at Alumni Hall, Mascot Knightro will be present
